Meetings of the Executive Committee, Transport

At the meeting of the executive committee of  Mariupol City Council, 39 issues were considered. One more step was taken towards solving the transport problem of Mariupol citizens. The city has an opportunity to obtain a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to update the trolleybus fleet.

‘Now there is a shortage of transport in Mariupol which is more than 250 units of equipment. This is reflected in the management of transport, the implementation of the traffic schedule and waiting time for residents. Those decisions that we take as part of the annual increase in transport, acquiring it and putting it into operation are not enough to solve the transport problem of Mariupol which has been formed not for one decade in a quick and a short way,’
the Mayor Vadim Boichenko noted.

Today the members of the executive committee supported the draft decision to approve the conclusion regarding the appropriateness of attracting a loan. The amount of financing is EUR 18 million, including a loan from EBRD EUR13 million, a loan to the Clean Technology Fund of UAH 2 million and an investment grant of the Eastern European partnership for energy efficiency and the environment of EUR 3 million. This will allow Mariupol to purchase 72 low-floor modern trolleybuses, 9 units of special equipment, perform an overhaul of the trolleybus network and the reconstruction of trolleybus depot № 4.

At the moment, there are 49 trolleybuses in Mariupol, 11 of which have already fulfilled their regulatory resource. Such a number of units can not ensure the quality filling of routes with an acceptable range of traffic in 10-15 minutes. On some routes there are 1-2 cars with an interval of 40-60 minutes.

The city tries to develop public transport with all elements of accessibility and modern comfort. As the director of the department of transport and communications of the City Council Vasiliy Klat said, Mariupolcooperates with IFC's international financial corporation closely to create a transport model. Almost all measurements of passenger traffic have been completed, all the initial data on transport mobility, population density, number of stop pavilions of existing routes, social centers and points of attraction of citizens have been included. Based on this, not only data on the transport model will appear soon but also serious steps to modernize the transport infrastructure.

‘Mariupol needs a new transport model of the city. The foundation of all developed European cities is infrastructure and transport. The share of municipal transport should be 70%. Mariupol should become comfortable also from the point of view of transport management,’
Vadim Boichenko stressed.
