In Mariupol, a solemn meeting has been held, timed to coincide with the 205th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko. Mariupol gathered in the square near the monument to Kobzar. With words of congratulations the deputy mayor Mikhail Kogut made a speech.
‘All the work and life of the great Ukrainian poet was filled with love for his native country. He fought for the unity of the Ukrainian people. Today we, as the faithful sons of the great Kobzar, must protect our country, in peace and prosperity build our state. We must continue to adhere to those postulates that were in the works of the great son of Ukraine,’ Mikhail Kogut said.
Counselor to the head of the Donetsk regional administration Nikolay Trofimenko and head of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Donetsk region Nikolay Semenishin joined the words of the deputy mayor.
Police officers paid tribute to the Ukrainian poet by reading lines from Lina Kostenko’s poetry about Taras Shevchenko.
The rally ended with the laying of flowers at the foot of the monument. After that, all those who wished, could confess their love for Cobazr's poetry.
