Domestic violence is systematically countered in Mariupol

Ksenia Sukhova, Secretary of Mariupol City Council, has taken part in the Coordination Meeting within the framework of the project “Cities and Communities Free from Domestic Violence”. The event took place in Kiev. It brought together representatives from 30 cities, government, British and Canadian embassies.

The organizer of the event is the Representative Office of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Ukraine. Mariupol became one of 15 cities in Ukraine that won the competition for participation in the projects “Cities and Communities Free from Domestic Violence”.

‘Domestic violence is one of the most widespread human rights violations. Together with UNFPA, we began to systematically address this problem. We created a city interdepartmental council on family issues, gender equality, demographic development and combating domestic violence. The Center for Social and Psychological Assistance to Victims of Violence was opened. It provides services of social support, psychological assistance, legal advice,’ Ksenia Sukhova said.

Within the framework of the project, more than 60 training events for more than 880 people were held in 15 selected cities, 45 municipal specialized experts were trained, 38 local initiatives were supported within the framework of the campaign “16 days against gender-based violence”.
