A report on the work of the municipal solid waste landfill has been made by its head Victor Azizov at the 45th session of the City Council. According to him, it was possible to develop and implement a balanced enterprise development strategy. It helped to bring the enterprise to an income level and became the basis for solving an important issue - the processing and disposal of municipal solid waste in Mariupol.

This year an agreement has been concluded with the French company ‘Beten Ingeniere’ to develop and justify the waste management system in the city. During its implementation, the French party carried out an analysis of the existing system, determined the morphological content of the waste and held consultations. Based on the study, the best option will be selected for organizing a solid waste processing system in Mariupol and strategies for its implementation over five years will be adopted. They plan to start reforming the existing system in 2020.

The municipal waste landfill also participates in the investment project. It will be implemented as part of Green Cities program by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The EBRD will provide loans to the company in the amount of EUR 14.5 million for a period of 13 years. Due to the memorandum signed with the EBRD, Mariupol adopted the direction for sustainable green development and received funding for the implementation of an ambitious project for Ukraine, including a grant of EUR 4 million.

According to the head of the municipal waste landfill, due to the support of the local budget, modern technology is involved in the landfill. It is equipped with a filtration system and comply with European standards. The technique allowed to optimize technical processes and improve working conditions. The amount of investments for its acquisition over three years amounted to about UAH 18 million from the city budget.

Victor Azizov emphasized that extensive measures and an economically sound tariff will help to optimize and improve the garbage gathering system. In the summer of this year, a tariff for the disposal of municipal solid waste was set at UAH 57.9 per ton. It is the lowest price in Ukraine. Besides, the lowest rate in Ukraine in the city and for the disposal of construction waste.

‘We have formed the most economically balanced and socially oriented cost of services. This eliminated the discharge of waste in unauthorized places. The enterprise also reached the level of economic growth,’ Victor Azizov said.

The plans include the construction of a new landfill and a waste sorting complex, the rehabilitation of urban landfills and the improvement of the garbage collection system. This will increase the service life of the landfill, increase economic performance and most importantly - improve the environment. The robot uses European standards.

It is worth noting there are three landfill sites in Mariupol. One is located in Primorskiy district and has not been functioning since 2008. Since 2010, degassing works have been carried out on its territory, today organic processes are in the stage of ‘attenuation’. Besides, a non-functioning landfill is located in Levoberezhniy district. Since March gas pipelines have been set, a compressor and gas generation station have been installed. The commissioning of the complex is planned at the end of 2019.
