Veterans were honored on Voyiniv-Vyzvolyteliv Square today. Vadym Boichenko, the Mayor, Victor Remsky, the Deputy Head of the Regional State Administration, Sergei Taruta, the People's Deputy, and other honorable guests expressed the words of gratitude to those who defended Mariupol 74 years ago and restored it after the Second World War.
Hundreds of people, who are not indifferent to the history and destiny of the city, have gathered there.
Honored places were taken by veterans who regained Mariupol 74 years ago and gave it free and peaceful life, made everything dependent on them for the city to be called ‘Pearl at the Sea’. Famous songs of those years, poems and congratulations sounded for them.
The Mayor, deputies, police officers and citizens came to welcome veterans. The rally traditionally began with the Anthem of Ukraine.
The Mayor noted that today Mariupol citizens were grateful for the freedom and honored the memory of those who did not come back home after the war. A minute of silence was announced in honor of those who gave their lives for a peaceful future.
Victor Remsky, the Deputy Head of the Regional State Administration, said in his speech of congratulation to veterans on the Liberation Day of Mariupol: “Donbas has given a lot of heroes during the Second World War. But time goes by, and the heroes leave us, but we will always remember their feats. Each of their feats is unique, and it is an example for each of us”.
Serhiy Taruta, the People's Deputy of Ukraine, also congratulated veterans: “We must always remember that peace is a valuable thing and we have to fight for it. We express a huge thank to all veterans for their feat. We want you to stay with us for as long as possible”.
All those present laid flowers to the monuments at the end of the solemn ceremony, and veterans were invited to the field kitchen.
