The implementation of the project ‘Empowering local governments and civil society in Ukraine and Moldova through participatory democracy instruments’ has started to be realized in Mariupol. Mayor Vadim Boichenko told this at a meeting with the Secretary General of the European Association of Local Democracy (ALDA) Antonella Valmorbida.

The project aims to involve the public in solving local problems. As part of its implementation, an analysis of the potential of democratic governance in Mariupol will be conducted in the coming months. According to its results, an analytical report will be provided, and after that the  representatives of the municipality and active residents will be able to take part in trainings and coach seminars. This will speed up the process of integrating the public into the management process.

Vadim Boichenko noted that this project will contribute to the creation of stable and strong ties between the authorities and civil society of Mariupol.

‘We are systematically working to ensure that Mariupol is open and effectively responding to the request of residents. Our success is evidenced by the city’s leadership in many Ukrainian local government quality ratings,’
Vadim Boichenko stressed.

In turn, the Secretary General of the European Association for Local Democracy (ALDA), Antonella Valmorbida, stressed the importance of developing democratic processes in society. She noted that every resident should feel the responsibility for the city in which he lives. According to her, the task of the project is to find common ground and explain to the public methods for achieving goals.

The project ‘Empowering local governments and civil society in Ukraine and Moldova through participatory democracy instruments’ was prepared by the Local Democracy Agency in Mariupol in collaboration with the Mariupol City Council with the support of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the European Association of Local Democracy (ALDA).
