It is planned to build a new sanitary landfill and waste sorting complex in the city in accordance with EU standards. The possibility of providing funds for the implementation of a large-scale project is being considered by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. This was announced by the bank following a meeting with mayor of Mariupol Vadym Boichenko.
This project provides for the reclamation of the existing landfill and the improvement of the infrastructure for the collection and transportation of municipal solid waste.
Every year city residents produce 140-160 thousand tons of municipal solid waste. The occupancy of the existing Left Bank polygon is more than 80%. According to the regulations, in its current form it can be used until 2024. A feature of the new project is the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
The total cost of the project is estimated at EUR 20 million. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development plans to allocate EUR 14.5 million. The remaining funds should be covered by a grant from the EU Neighborhood Investment Platform - up to EUR 4 million and the local budget - at least EUR 1.5 million.
“Mariupol is confidently striding towards sustainable European development. Modernization of municipal solid waste infrastructure is another step in solving urgent problems. This is an ambitious project that will help introduce waste sorting in the city and improve the environmental situation,” Deputy Mayor Mykhailo Kohut said.
