A discussion with the bulk of the project for the development of technical education and reconstruction of “Azovets” city sports center has been held in Mariupol Technical Lyceum. In particular, a project was presented to build a private technological university.
The new university is planned to be built from scratch in the area of the City Garden by Metinvest Group. According to Deputy Mayor Serhiy Zakharov, the university will allow the city to receive three key advantages.
“Mariupol youth will receive a world-class education without leaving for other cities and countries. Mariupol will be able to be more competitive in terms of education,” Serhiy Zakharov said.
The new educational institution will be able to attract students from other regions of the country, which will contribute to the development of Mariupol as a student city. This was told by the deputy of the city Olexander Kochurin.
“Over the past five years, we have already managed to change the situation with the outflow of young people. 30% of school graduates stayed in the city, today the amount of students is 70%. But still, the percentage of students in Mariupol is quite low - 3%. Namely, students and science are an integral part of sustainable development of the community,” Olexander Kochurin noted.
According to the rector of Metinvest-Polytechnic, Olexander Pochtenny, the university plans to train highly qualified personnel in a new format. The institution will use a dual form of education that combines theory with practice. Scientists will be taught not only from Ukraine, but also from Germany, Austria, Italy. The specialists will be trained in the following areas: metallurgy, mining, economics and IT-science. At the same time, training for Mariupol residents will be free. The best students will be able to receive scholarships and grants.
The building is proposed to be made of steel structures with consoles and an observation deck. The rooftop terrace will overlook the sea. The campus has a modern library, international laboratories and an open space accessible to all residents. The author of the project is the Dutch-Japanese architect Hiroki Matsura. Now he is also working on a concept for the development of the City Garden, which he will present to the city.
“Metinvest Group is a strategic partner of Mariupol. This university is a continuation of the development of the city's educational cluster. The development of modern technology education is the focus of our company. The university will be able to accumulate the best teachers. Students will receive modern competitive knowledge and will be able to find employment in their specialty in any company in the country, ”Lilia Tkachenko, Director of the Regional Development Department of Metinvest Group said.
The importance of the initiative was noted by the public representatives present. Thus, the chairman of the Youth Council of Mariupol, Alina Kozytska stressed that young people need such a university of a technical direction. In her opinion, this will open up new opportunities for self-realization of students in their hometown.
In addition, those present discussed the reconstruction of "Azovets". The sports facility is being transformed into a multifunctional arena with two fields, a running track and a workout area. The renovated administrative building will be equipped with new changing rooms and a sports hall. Capital repairs are planned by Metinvest Group at its own expense. However, the object will remain in city ownership.
