A conference on territorial defense has been held in Mariupol. Deputy Mayor Arkady Meshkov noted that the issue of security is one of the priorities for the city community. Creating a strong force base is to ensure sustainable development and attract investment to the city.

‘Safe city’ complex program is realized in Mariupol now. It contains four areas: improving law and order, defense, counter-terrorism and civil defense of the city. From 2016 to 2020, UAH 142 million were invested in security.

‘Mariupol has managed to create proper law and order in six years. And the line of contact collided for tens of kilometers. This happened due to the coordinated and efficient work of the entire power block,’ the deputy mayor said.

109 territorial defense brigades have been formed in the Donetsk region. Its office is located in Mariupol. Mariupol United City Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support has formed 107 battalions of territorial defense.

The Territorial Defense Plan of the city of Mariupol was also approved. It identifies the locations of detachments, collection points for personnel and equipment.

‘When the enemy is on the border, we must remember that it is not only the army that defends the territory. There is also territorial defense. Our goal is to provide full support to the army at difficult times. We also continue to fight against fakes and cooperate with society and volunteers,’ Vladyslav Sobolevsky, Deputy Chief of Staff of the National Corps said.

Then, during the working meeting, the draft Law ‘On Territorial Defense of Ukraine’ was discussed. If adopted, the costs of state and local budgets will be increased, including the establishment and operation of the main civil-military body of territorial defense. It will improve the provision of territorial defense troops with weapons and ammunition, material and technical means.

‘The creation of territorial defense detachments is definitely important for Mariupol. However, such actions are large-scale, as for the city, so they must be supported by funding from the state budget. In this direction, the bill still needs to be finalized,’ Arkady Meshkov stressed.
