Looking up to Mariupol! Urban projects recognized as the best municipal practices in Ukraine

The winners of the X competition "Best practices of local self-government-2021" have been announced today. More than 100 communities from different parts of Ukraine took part in it. Mariupol was noted in all three nominations. The creation of the Children's Regional Infectious Disease Center on the basis of the city hospital №4, the Startup Development Center "1991 Mariupol", as well as the city Center for the support and development of small and medium-sized businesses are recognized as the best practices.

“Today the role of local authorities is strengthening in Ukraine, territorial communities prove their worth and become drivers of the development of the entire state. This is an indicator of the success of decentralization. Therefore, we must reinforce and develop the successes of communities, ” Oleksiy Chernyshev, Minister of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine said.

The topics of this year's competition are “Community Cohesion”, “Organization of the system of providing medical services at the local level in the context of health care reform”, “Implementation of strategic development projects”. 28 best practices aimed at improving the quality of life and sustainable development of territorial communities were noted. Donetsk region took the largest number of awards - 6. Half of them were awarded to Mariupol.

Our city received the first place on the topic "Organization of the system of providing medical services at the local level in the context of the reform of the health care system." This is a project to prevent the development of infectious diseases and improve the quality of medical services through the creation of the Children's Regional Infectious Disease Center on the basis of the city hospital №4 named after I. Matsuka.

“Due to the creation of the Children's Regional Infectious Disease Center, we managed to form a powerful medical team of specialists. Here they provide services to young patients from Mariupol, as well as from the entire south of the region and part of Zaporizhzhia region. There is a bacterial laboratory, which is equipped with modern equipment to provide high-quality medical care. We don't stop there. The next step is to continue the development of the hospital campus. In 2022, we plan to begin construction of an infectious disease center for adults here, ” Healthcare Director Andrei Rempel said.

In addition, Mariupol received a special distinction in the topic “Community cohesion”. For the project "Formation of sustainable infrastructure, as well as the popularization and provision of growth in support for micro, small and medium-sized businesses in the city of Mariupol through the creation of a city Center for the support and development of small and medium-sized businesses." The city took a second degree diploma on the topic “Implementation of strategic development projects” for “Creating conditions for the development and professional growth of the city's youth and the introduction of innovative solutions through the creation of the Startup Development Center“ 1991 Mariupol ”.

The official organizer of the Competition is the Ministry of Regional Development. The partner of the Competition is the Council of Europe Program “Decentralization and Reform of Public Administration in Ukraine”.
