Every year on the third Thursday in May, World Vyshyvanka Day is celebrated. Today, thousands of Mariupol residents wore national clothes and social media feeds were filled with bright photos. Employees of various organizations and enterprises of the city came to work in embroidered shirts. Mayor Vadym Boichenko, his deputies and representatives of the Mariupol municipality supported the festive mood and also wore embroidered shirts.

Vyshsyvanka Day is a holiday that identifies us as the Ukrainians. Vyshyvanka, that is a Ukrainian name of embroidery shirt, is not just clothes. It is a national symbol. And also the only element of the Ukrainian national costume which moved to modern everyday wardrobe of inhabitants of different countries of the world.

Each region of Ukraine can boast of its unique embroideries. They differ in styles, color, method of embroidery, ornament and patterns. The modern embroidered shirt contains a combination of ornaments from different regions, but our grandparents kept in mind the features of the embroidered shirts of each region of the country - they contain the history of Ukraine. Historically, you can often find open work embroidery in the Donetsk region, plants, lush flowers, whole bouquets and trees.
