Today the First Deputy Mayor Mykhailo Kohut has met with the representatives of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). They discussed the possible implementation of affordable housing for both IDPs and locals.

Potential programs include ‘Affordable housing for internally displaced persons and those who permanently live in the community’. It is funded by the German government. Affordable housing construction projects are being implemented in Kramatorsk and Severodonetsk at the moment. IOM plans to extend the program and is considering cities that could become participants. Mariupol is among them.

‘Mariupol is interested in building affordable housing. This is not only a solution to the housing problem, but also an investment in people and their future. Thus, we create opportunities for residents to stay in Mariupol, work for its benefit and help us develop the city,’ the first deputy mayor Mykhailo Kohut said.

The Affordable Housing for Internally Displaced People and Community Residents program provides for the construction or renovation of housing, fund management and capacity building for local authorities. Housing is rented or leased with the right of redemption in the ratio: 80% - IDPs and 20% - locals. They pay for housing at a reduced rate and the rent is transferred to a special fund. These funds are used for further housing construction, the purchase of secondary of the implementation of social projects. This ensures maximum transparency and accountability of all procedures at all levels.
