Mariupol commemorates 77 years since the Day of Liberation from Nazi invaders

A triumphant meeting dedicated to the 77th anniversary since the Day of Liberation of Mariupol from Nazi invaders has been held near the monument to the soldiers liberators. The City Mayor Vadym Boichenko came to appreciate the veterans of the Second World War.

“The war did not break the heroical spirit of our grandfathers. They could find the power and stamina to revive Mariupol. They were moving forward with decision. They were building peaceful and free future for their children. Now we are continuing the development of Mariupol making comfortable conditions for the veterans. Remembering the history of those years, we are moving to the future making Mariupol the city of opportunities for the youth”, Vadym Boichenko admitted.

After the minute of silence about dead heroes of Mariupol, the flowers were laid to the bottom of the monuments. After that, the veterans were invited to the field kitchen. Creative teams of the city prepared the performance with the chamber orchestra on the topic of war and returning home.

Besides, stands with exhibitions, dedicated to the anniversary of Liberation of Mariupol were installed there. There were portraits of the participants of the Second Wolrd War who protected Mariupol and helped to rebuild it on the photos from personal files of Mariupol residents.

“There are more than 1000 of photographs of war veterans who got an honorary rank for bravery and courage. They are original residents or people who stayed in our city in postwar years. Everything played a huge role to return freedom to our city as well as to revive the city after occupation. The majority of stories about acts of bravery of Mariupol residents have been given to the museum by the families and relatives of the heroes”, the head of division of local history museum Nadezhda Gashenenko said.
