Today, the experts of the project ‘Integrated development of the city in Ukraine’ from GIZ have met with the deputy mayors to discuss a possible cooperation. Mariupol became the first city in Eastern Ukraine that the delegation visited.
‘Integrated City Development in Ukraine’ is being implemented in six cities of Ukraine. The goal is to support cities in preparing for integrated development with public involvement. The project also includes training and a series of trainings. Now the organizers are selecting another city to expand the list of project participants.
‘Now we are looking for a city in eastern Ukraine, which would be suitable to join the project. The first condition is that the city wants to participate in the project,’ the expert of the assessment mission of Phase II of ‘Integrated Cities of Ukraine’ project, Minolph Shpikermann noted.
In turn, the delegations spoke about the development strategy of Mariupol, key projects and cooperation with international partners. Thus, deputy mayor Sergey Orlov noted that Mariupol is moving to the development of a post-industrial economy. It includes the development of micro and small business, the service sector, the development of a creative economy, IT-sphere, external and internal logistics, as well as higher educational institutions. In addition, Mariupol is building cluster medicine and developing the direction of sport, culture and tourism. The city has had a sustainable green development and the creation of new opportunities for the residents.
The first deputy mayor, Mikhail Kogut, said that with the transition to HOAs, the level of activity of the residents increases. Due to the support program for several years, more than 700 of HOAs were created in the city. According to him, the residents not only shared responsibility for the housing stock of the city, but also initiated changes.
At the end of the meeting, Minolf Spikermann noted that Mariupol is an interesting city for cooperation. In turn, the representatives of the municipality expressed interest in the participation of the city in ‘Integrated development of the city in Ukraine’ project. The question of participation of Mariupol and other cities of Ukraine will be considered by an expert commission.
