Started from the 57th place, Mariupol has become a top leader of transparency rating of Ukrainian cities according to the version of Transparency International Ukraine organization for less than a year. Mariupol took the second place earlier that month.
The project started in early 2017 and covered 100 of the largest cities of Ukraine. Its goal is to eradicate corruption in local government bodies making their work as open and accountable as possible.
At the start of the project Mariupol took the place in the middle of the rating. As Mikhail Ivchenko, the head of the tender department, noted in an interview with Transparency International Ukraine, the main reason of low results in the beginning was a lack of a modern website of the city council. Since July 2017, such a resource has appeared and Mariupol has topped the rating for over half a year.
The overall score in the rating is formed on the basis of 13 indicators among which there are information about work of local governments, information about electronic procurement, data of utilities and educational institutions, information about the city budget, etc. The largest score among all cities in Mariupol is in eSourcing. The final figure which has made the city to take the first position is 65.82 that is more than a point higher than Pokrov has which takes the second place.
