Today the city government with the representatives of city-forming enterprises, strategic partners, local deputies and the public have discussed the implementation of measures to improve the environment of the city in Mariupol State University. The Mayor of Mariupol Vadim Boichenko urged to join forces to follow the path of a sustainable green development of the city.
The heads of a city-forming enterprise spoke in detail about the progress of projects aimed at modernizing production facilities and reducing the number of harmful emissions to the atmosphere. For example, yesterday the first complex of modern gas purification was launched at the sinter plant of the Ilyich Steel Works.
‘Our strategy is modernization, ecology and efficiency. This is the trick where we invest money. Mariupol will receive 300 million dollars of investment for environmental projects in the next 5 years. By 2021 Mariupol will have become one of the cleanest industrial cities of Ukraine,’ Yury Ryzhenkov, the general director of the Metinvest Group said.
In turn, the mayor of the city noted that metallurgical enterprises fulfill their obligations to improve industrial ecology. However, the general environmental background of Mariupol is influenced by other problems that are needed to be solved. Among them there is the system of water supply and sanitation, recycling of garbage, high level of CO2 pollution and management of small ecology. Mariupol works in these areas, developing projects, cooperating with strategic international partners and adopting the best European practices.
The mayor also said that the city is engaged into the reconstruction of parks and squares, the prospects for the creation of the city's Botanical Garden as well as eco-education of residents starting from the school bench, the modernization of the city's transport infrastructure and the decontamination of landfills. They are looking for ways to provide citizens with quality drinking water and building modern cleaning facilities.
During the discussion, the issues of controlling the amount of emissions into the atmosphere and the removal of the slag mountain were raised. As a part of the constructive dialogue, the parties came to a common denominator and discussed the plans for the future.
