24 January 2020, 10:06

A tragedy occurred at Vostochnyi district five years ago. Every year Mariupol honors the memory of dead civilians during attack. In the morning, a prayer service and a requiem took place in the church near the memorial sign ‘To those who died in an undeclared war’. Electric sirens sounded in memory of the dead.

‘This day is very difficult to find the words. Five years have passed and the pain does not become ill. I want to express my gratitude to Mariupol community, which on that terrible day with its solidarity proved how much it loves and cares for her city and its inhabitants. We must understand that the dead live in our hearts as long as the memory of them lives. We remember them!’, the chairman of the Donetsk regional military-civil administration Pavel Kirilenko said.

Mayor Vadym Boichenko shared his memories of that day. He emphasized that this terrible tragedy forever left an imprint in the souls of Mariupol residents.

‘That Saturday morning did not mean disaster. Shell explosions. 30 seconds - 30 deaths, 117 wounded, destroyed infrastructure, tightened heart from pain and fear. Life divided into ‘before’ and ‘after’. They say that time heals, but today in the temple we saw how much it hurts. This pain cannot be expressed in words. This day forever united our country Ukraine, united every resident of Mariupol,’ Vadym Boichenko said.

He said that on January 24, 2015, caring Mariupol residents, together with metallurgists, rescuers, medical workers and representatives of the power unit, took part in the rectification of the consequences of the shelling and helped restore Vostochny microdistrict.

‘Of course, we learned to restore the infrastructure - kindergartens, schools, homes, but it is impossible to return those people who left their lives on that tragic morning. The most valuable and fragile that we have is a human life. I want us to never forget this tragedy. Each of us must do everything possible and impossible so that it never repeats itself in our country and Mariupol,’ the Mayor emphasized.

The rally ended with a requiem by laying flowers at the monument to the dead. Children’s toys were also placed at its foot.
