Mariupol Mayor Vadim Boichenko has met with the Deputy Chairman of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Europe and Eurasia Bureau Margot Ellis. During the working visit, the parties discussed the results of joint projects and real changes.

Due to technical and expert support of partners, Mariupol became an open, accessible and transparent city. With the help of USAID, the city opened the first in the Donetsk region Center of Administrative Services.

Vadim Boichenko appreciated the USAID representatives for the fruitful cooperation and high appreciation of the work of the local authorities.

‘Over the past three years, we have implemented a number of successful projects. They are aimed at the rebirth of our city. Today Mariupol is fighting for the hearts and minds of the entire region. Our city is intended to become a symbol of the revived Ukrainian Donbass,’
the Mayor stressed.

The Mayor of Mariupol noted that one of the factors for the successful development of the city was the effective management of the city’s budget. This is confirmed by the evaluation of international partners. Thus, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) highly appreciates the budgeting processes in Mariupol.

‘We have increased the development budget. We have developed an effective strategy for the protection of financial resources and their management. The basis was the principle of 60% to 40%. Where 60% is the operating part and 40% is the investment part. Thus, last year, implemented projects cost more than $ 40 million,’
Vadim Boichenko noted.

In turn, Margo Ellis spoke about USAID's plans for the development of the eastern regions of Ukraine.

‘We launched two projects in the East of Ukraine with a total cost of about $ 120 million. In the course of their implementation Mariupol will also receive its benefits. Programs work in the field of economic development and self-government. We hope that the residents themselves will take part in the management of the cities,’ Margo Ellis said.

The Deputy Chairman of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) stressed the importance of a common vision in the development of the region and appreciated the local authorities for their clear strategy and active position.
